Morocco Sends Aid to HurricaneStricken Caribbean Islands

Rabat – King Mohammed VI has given instructions to send aid to the Caribbean islands devastated by hurricanes.Morocco will send humanitarian relief supplies to Antigua and Barbuda and the Commonwealth of Dominica.Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement saying that the royal instructions to send aid to the populations stricken by the storms reflects Morocco’s permanent solidarity with those two friendly countries which have always shown their firm support to Morocco.” The kingdom will mainly send basic goods and help with the construction efforts in those countries, explained the release.The recent wave of devastating storms in the Caribbean left Dominica, as CNN called it, “knocked to its knees.”The nation island’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said that Hurricane Maria massively damaged his country’s economic sectors.“Our agriculture sector is 100 percent destroyed. Our tourism is, I would say, about 95 percent destroyed,” he explained.As for Barbuda, which forms a country along with Antigua, media reports say that the island has been annihilated. The island’s 16,000 inhabitants, who fled with their lives to Puerto Rico as Hurricane Irma was ravaging the island, are still afraid or coming back.“For the first time in 300 years, there’s not a single living person on the island of Barbuda,” the country’s ambassador to the United States Ronald Sanders to National Public Radio (NPR).Earlier in September King Mohammed VI ordered a humanitarian supply to be sent to Bangladesh to help with the efforts of accommodating the continuous influx of Rohingya refugees escaping persecution in neighboring Myanmar.The Moroccan aid supply comprised of tents, covers, basic food, and medicine. read more
