Essequibo Coast couple placed on bail for Trafficking In Persons

first_imgA husband and wife are back before the court facing new charges of Trafficking In Persons.Fifty-three-year-old Kamwattie Rambarran called “Kama” and 58-year-old Dhanraj Rambarran called “Jaman”, both of Lot 132 Henrietta Village, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court to answer to two charges of Trafficking In Persons.It is alleged that between January 1 and February 16, 2019, at La Cabana Bar at Henrietta Village, Essequibo Coast, the couple harboured and trafficked two Venezuelan women for sexual exploitation.The prosecution is contending that on the day in question, police ranks conducted a search at the location and during this exercise, five females were found, one being under the age of 18. The women were suspected of being victims of Trafficking In Persons.The couple was charged on April 17, 2019, for using their place of business as a brothel but on Tuesday, that charge was withdrawn based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the TIP charge was instituted.Attorney-at-Law Bernard DaSilva, who represented both defendants, in a bail application told the court that his clients are not flight risks and they are willing to comply with any conditions given by the court.Bail was granted in the sum of $200,000 each. The case will continue on May 15, 2019.last_img read more
