Still as visionary and eccentric as it was when it was built in the 1920s, the Schroder House by Gerrit Rietveld continues to impress architects and interior designers with its innovative solutions to prominent design questions of its time.Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsThe flexibility of the interior spaces and the obviously planar quality of the house both give it an edge that makes it distinguishable and unique on every level.Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsThe Schroder House is the only building that was designed in complete accordance with the De Stijl style,  which was marked by primary colors and pure ideas. Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsFounded in 1917, the movement was named after a periodical that became the most influential voice for the ideals of modern art and architecture in the Netherlands; other famous people of the movement include Piet Mondrian and J.J.P. Oud. The group of artists and architects “sought for the universal, as the individual was losing its significance… abstraction, precision, geometry, striving towards artistic purity and austerity.”Save this picture!Courtesy of Great Buildings OnlineUpon the death of Mr. Schroder Schrader, his wife felt the need to move into a smaller house with their three kids, where she would live until her death in 1985. The two-story house contains a transformable kitchen/dining/living area, studio space and reading room on the bottom, and the second floor contained bedrooms and storage space, only separated by portable partitions.Save this picture!Courtesy of Great Buildings OnlineThe flexibility of space meant that there was no hierarchical arrangement of rooms in the floor plan. The collapsable walls upstairs positioned around a central staircase were designed to provide the children with an option of pushing the partitions in during the day for an open play space and closing them at night for private bedrooms. Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsThe three criteria given by Mrs. Schroder about the rooms for her kids stated that a bed should be able to fit in two different positions, each room should have access to the water supply and drainage, and all should have a door to access the outdoors directly.Save this picture!Courtesy of Great Buildings OnlineThis kind of detail was well planned by Rietveld and was prominent in other areas of the design, like specific paint colors to distinguish different spaces or functions. An interesting example of this is the front door, where black paint is used because Rietveld anticipated it would be accessed the most and would therefore be easily soiled.Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsInitially considered the outskirts of Utrecht, the lot on which the house is built opened up to only a few views worth framing. It is obvious that the architect had previous experience making furniture, especially when noticing the detail and functionality of the window screen, portable partitions, and table made for the children.Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsWhat makes the Schroder House an icon of the Modern Movement is its radical approach to design, the use of space, and the purity of its concepts and ideas as represented in the De Stijl movement. Its transformational quality of evenly matched spaces composed of independent planes perfectly met the goals of the De Stijl movement. Save this picture!© wikimedia commons“As with his early chairs, Rietveld gave a new spatial meaning to the straight lines and rectangular planes of the various architectural structural elements, slabs, posts and beams, which were composed in a balanced ensemble.”The main structure of the house is of reinforced concrete slabs and steel profiles. Walls are made of brick and plaster; window frames, doors, and floors were made from wood. To preserve the strict design standards about intersecting planes, the windows are hinged so that they are only able to open 90 degrees to the wall.Save this picture!© wikimedia commonsProject gallerySee allShow lessMuseum of Environmental Science / SnøhettaArticlesKes / AAT + Makoto Yokomizo ArchitectsArticles Share Architects: Gerrit Rietveld Year Completion year of this architecture project “COPY” Year:  Photographscenter_img 1925 The Netherlands “COPY” Houses ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOr Clipboard Save this picture!© Maria GonzalezWritten by Megan Sveiven Share AD Classics: Rietveld Schroder House / Gerrit Rietveld CopyAbout this officeGerrit RietveldOfficeFollowProductsSteelConcrete#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsArchitecture ClassicsResidential ArchitectureHousesUtrechtHousesThe NetherlandsPublished on December 29, 2010Cite: Megan Sveiven. “AD Classics: Rietveld Schroder House / Gerrit Rietveld” 29 Dec 2010. Speaker advocates for relationship violence awareness

first_imgIn his final lecture after 18 years of speaking engagements, Tom Santoro spoke to Saint Mary’s students on Thursday about the warning signs of dating violence and his personal experience with issue.Santoro said his daughter, Lisa Santoro, was killed by her ex-boyfriend, who had never previously shown signs of verbal, emotional or physical abuse. However, after Lisa’s murder, the Santoro family found out he had been stalking Lisa for months and had beaten someone the day they broke up — both signs that indicated he was an abuser.Santoro showed a video about his daughter, which featured her delivering a prayer to her high school class for all victims of violence.“She wanted to pray for violence in her day, for the end of it,” Santoro said. “Lisa’s not here to carry out her prayer and her dream. So if I reach one person in this room today, I did something for Lisa, but I also did something for all the victims of domestic and dating violence.”Santoro said abuse almost always starts out with verbal abuse.“A little name calling, making fun of you, putting you down in front of your friends, [that is] outright verbal abuse,” Santoro said. “When they do that to you, and they do that over and over again, a person starts to believe what they’re being told.”Santoro said victims of relationship violence go back to their abuser an average of seven times. He said this is because victims block out the bad parts of their relationship and focus on the few good aspects.Additionally, he said, many victims believe themselves to be in love, the result being that no matter how badly they are treated, victims find it hard to let go of their abuser. Santoro also said although women are on average more likely to be the victim of relationship violence, men can also be affected by the issue.“When someone does something to hurt you, and they do this to you over and over again, there’s your red flag,” he said. “There’s your warning, and that’s when you should step back.”The two most important parts of a relationship are respect and trust, Santoro said. “Find a partner who is going to respect you and trust you,” he said. “I know it takes time to build up respect and trust, but when you find it, you should be in a healthy — and even more importantly, you should be in a very safe — relationship.“You have to trust your partner. You cannot stop them if they want to go do something. A girl should never have to worry about getting caught talking to another guy because she’s scared her boyfriend will get mad.”Santoro said the most important thing to do if a friend is in an abusive relationship is to be supportive and to remind that friend that it is not his or her fault. Although victims of abuse may try to push away anyone who tries to help, Santoro said, it is important not to give up on them.Tags: abuse, dating violence, relationship violencelast_img read more

Brazilian Military and Police Occupy Rio de Janeiro Slum

first_imgBy Dialogo March 05, 2013 On March 3, Brazilian Police moved to occupy slums near Rio de Janeiro’s international airport and seaport as part of efforts to drive out drug traffickers ahead of the 2014 World Cup. The operation involved hundreds of police backed by mechanized units of the Military, which entered Caju and Barreira do Vasco favelas to begin establishing control of their narrow streets. There were no immediate reports of resistance from residents of the township. Officials said earlier that more than 1,000 police and 200 Brazilian Navy commandos in armored vehicles had been planned to take part in the operation. According to Police, their next target would be violence-plagued Mare, an area near the airport largely controlled by drug gangs and militia units. The area, home to 75,000 people, is ringed by freeways, including one that provides access to Galeao International Airport. Rio’s feared Military Police battalion BOPE was set to occupy the zone until a specially-trained police force known as UPP can be deployed. In 2008, Rio authorities moved to reassert control in lawless favelas, or slums, ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. So far, 30 UPPs (Police Pacification Units) with more than 8,000 officers have been deployed and are protecting more than half of the two million people who live in local slums. Authorities said their goal is to have 40 UPPs in place by 2014. Violence has receded since police launched operations in the slums, including in Rocinha, Brazil’s largest shantytown. In the first half of 2012, the murder rate fell to 10.9 per 100,000 residents, far lower than the national average of 26 per 100,000. In 2009, the murder rate in Rio was 36.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. the favelas in rio de janeiro should be controlled by military forceslast_img read more

Kruger loses three rhinos on 1 January

first_img9 January 2013 South Africa’s fight against rhino poaching was dealt an early blow in 2013, with three rhinos killed in the Kruger National Park on the first day of the new year. All three rhinos were shot dead and dehorned on 1 January, according to Kruger National Park managing executive Abe Sibiya. “In the first incident, two white rhino were shot and killed on the Houtboschrand section of the Kruger National Park,” Sibiya said on Wednesday. “Indications are that the two animals were shot on January 1 by a poaching group from Mozambique. Their horns were removed and the group escaped.” He said a hunting rifle and two sets of horns were recovered. In the second incident, rangers deployed in the Lower Sabie area of the park made contact with a group of three poachers. “Shots were exchanged and the three managed to escape, but left behind a high calibre hunting rifle and a bag containing a set of rhino horns. In a follow-up operation, the carcass of a white rhino with horns missing was discovered,” Sibiya said. “This is not an ideal way to start the year, but the initiatives that we have put in place, especially the aerial surveillance one, are teaching us a lot and we are making a lot of progress.” No arrests have been made and police investigations are continuing. According to the South African National Parks statistics, a total of 633 rhinos were killed for their horns in South Africa in 2012. The Kruger National Park lost 395 rhinos to poaching in the same period. The North West, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo provinces collectively accounted for the loss of 197 rhinos in 2012. Pamela Anderson Wants To Talk To Canadian Prime Minister About Sealing Subsidies

first_imgThis week, PETA Honorary Director Pamela Anderson wrote to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking to meet with him and discuss ending federal subsidies of the commercial seal slaughter, as Norway recently did.“Congratulations on your new role as prime minister,” wrote the star. “I admire your progressive views on LGBT rights and your compassionate stance on the Syrian refugee crisis. I also commend you for naming a gender-balanced Cabinet, as you said, “Because it’s 2015.” There’s another issue that has sullied Canada at home and abroad for years, which I hope you’ll address: wasteful government bailouts of the nearly extinct East Coast commercial seal trade. As a concerned Canadian and as an honorary director of PETA, which has more than 280,000 members and supporters in Canada, I’d like to meet with you in person to discuss this issue.“All major markets have rejected seal products: The U.S., the European Union, and Russia have all banned seal-fur imports because of animal-welfare concerns. Former Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea admitted that China has said no to seal meat despite years of marketing efforts to create a demand there. World leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have expressed opposition to the industry, and even local sentiment is changing, as this editorial shows. Still, the government pours millions of tax dollars into propping up this dying industry, which has long cost Canada more money to support than it brings in.“I urge you to usher in a new era of fiscal responsibility and kindness by ending federal subsidies of the commercial seal slaughter, as Norway recently did. This tiny off-season trade makes up less than 1 percent of Newfoundland’s economy. Might you be available to discuss cutting or phasing out subsidies to this controversial, faded off-season trade? The money could be much more wisely spent promoting other Canadian businesses with a brighter future that would make the world see us as the sophisticated, enlightened modern country that we want to be. I hope to hear that you will be available in the coming weeks to discuss this important issue in a more official setting.”last_img read more
