Canete’s honor marks the Jacks’ third weekly award of the season after sophomore guard/forward Kevon Harris won the award on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. Canete led the Lumberjacks to an 83-82 win at LSU on Saturday to improve SFA’s record to 10-1 on the season, furthering the Jacks’ best start since 2012-13. The victory was their first over a current SEC team since 1970 when they defeated Texas A&M 89-82 in College Station. Canete provided late heroics for Stephen F. Austin on Saturday when he dropped the last seven points for the Lumberjacks, including a go-ahead layup with less than five seconds left, to earn an 83-82 win at LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The senior from Lake Worth, Fla., notched a game-high 20 points on a .727 day from the field highlighted by sinking 4-for-5 from three-point range in 26 minutes of action. He also added four assists. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
